February 2012 (update 25 Fed 2012)
Upon returning to Belfast after the Blessington training camp in late January. The senior and inter women joined forces with the senior men to host a fundraising event for an MRI scanner at the Royal Victoria Children’s Hospital in Belfast. The squads travelled to the Quays Shopping Centre in Newry where the medical students held a health check clinic for the public, while an all day ergathon took place. The day was extremely successful with everyone working hard and the public digging deep! Photos of the event can be found in the photos section of the queens rowing web site. Given the success of the event a second fundraising day has been organised for Saturday 31 March at the Bloomfield shopping centre, Bangor, Co Down.
Also this month the Ulster Bank Queens Sport Bursary Awards were announced. Queens rowing yet again for the third successive year, had a number of successful athletes with 9 Boat club members receiving the awards (Ulster Bank Bursary Awards 2012). In addition to these awards a further 15 rower’s men and women were invited to join the Queens rowing academy. The Clubs are grateful for the continuous support from Queens’s sports. This investment in athlete development, along with significant capital investment in boats, over the last three seasons has shown that the university is committed to supporting the clubs and their athletes to achieve continued successes on and off the water.
On the eve of the Lagan head 'The Finishing Post' was also unvailed. This memorial was in tribute to Charlie Charlton, past captain of Queens boat club, and will now mark the finish line of the Lagan head for years to come.
With Head racing season underway the squads are keen to put their months of winter training into practice. All crews have opened their season at Lagan Head with a successful day experienced by all. Both clubs would like to thank all coaches and everyone that lent a hand around the club on and leading up to race day. A full brake down of the results can be found on the event and results page (results page).
Next up for the mens club is the Erne head of the river (3 March 2012), while the novice Women will travel to London for the Women’s 8s head on the same day. The ladies will be accompanied by a coaching team of Gavin Meek and Marc Butler. Any London based Queens supporters are welcome to cheer the girls on. They will be boating from London Rowing Club, Putney on Friday afternoon (2 march) and on the race day. The ladies have comparative starting potions of 27 and 67(Starting Draw WHORR), which will give them a great opportunity to perform well on their first visit to the Women’s Head. Also note that the men will bring two boats to London for the eights Head on St Patrick's Day (HORR Draw 2012). As for the novice men you can keep up to date with their progress here (QUBBC Novice men's Blog)
